The Girl Who Missed The Bus on the Second Day of School

I contemplated not blogging today. . . the day did not start out well and I honestly wasn't sure that I wanted to remember most of it.  But, as someday it might be comical to look back on I thought I'd go ahead and chronical the day.

As our new normal requires, I awoke Brooklyn at 5:45 this morning.  It was more than clear that Miss Kindergarten was NOT excited about waking up this morning.  Legs flailing in the air and wails of "I want daddy" echoed through her room.  As we changed out of her pjs I started putting her clothes on her which resulted in more wailing of "my skirt is itttchhyyyy. . I don't likkkeee itttt. . . mommmyyyyyyy!!!"  Sigh.  I am not a morning person and this was not the start I was hoping for to my day.  I finally reached a deal with Brooklyn where she would wear the skirt for ten minutes and then decide whether to change.  After all, she had picked the skirt the night before. . . and it has a built in underlayer that protected her legs from any itchiness.  Deal reached.

As we went down the stairs so I could get ready and she could sit with Matt she mumbled that it must still be nighttime because it was dark and the lamp post was still on.  Yes, Brooklyn girl. . I understand that it seems early. . . but this is new normal.  She laid down with Matt and within moments I heard the whining about the skirt.  "Mommy won't let me take off my itchy skirt. . it is so itchyyyy. . I don't like itttt. . .daddy it itchessss!"  Sigh. . .upstairs I went to find her another pair of shorts.  Changed her shorts, told her to get to the breakfast table, got her a blueberry muffin and returned to getting ready for work.

As I finished washing my face I noticed that my hair straightener wasn't plugged in.  I plugged it in and decided that I better do Brooklyn's hair while I waited for it to warm up.  Matt isn't comfortable doing her hair when it's dry and we don't have time in the morning to allow for a full bath / hair wash.  I tossed her hair in a cute little pony tail and returned to straightening my own hair.

After I was ready for work I returned to the kitchen to put her shoes on her and kiss her goodbye. . . giving her and Matt both the "you need to leave the house in five minutes to get to the bus stop on time" (that would have given them a little extra time to even be a bit early just in case. . .that's my style).  As I drove away to work I was a little nervous. . . in fact, I almost turned around and went home to be sure she got on the box but I kept thinking "Don't be irrational. . .they have it under control."

So, as I'm pulling into the parking lot at work my phone is ringing:

Me:  "Hello?"
Matt: "Uh . . what time do I have to have her to school."
Me:  "WHAT?  She missed the bus?"
Matt: "Yes, it's no big deal. . I'll take her to school"
Me: "Matt. . this IS a big deal. .she needs routine. . she needs to continue to get to know the kids she rides the bus with. . . . "  * *  A LOT of emotional rambling. * *
Matt:  "What time does she have to be there?"
Me:  "Between 7:25 and 7:30."

I could feel myself tearing up as I entered the building.  I am totally Type A. . I'll own it. . . . I like to be in control and typically am in control.  It's VERY hard for me to walk out the door on mornings like today and trust that everything will work okay while I'm gone.  So today was a bit of the "working mom slap".  In reality it's no big deal. . Brooklyn got to school okay. . . she arrived before the bus and eagerly hopped into the classroom excited to see her teacher.  But, it wasn't how it was supposed to go and makes me wonder if they can handle getting to the bus when I'm not there.

Now. . the long story is that Brooklyn was dawdling. . .after I left she couldn't get her pants down to go potty so she switched back to the itchy skirt (gasp!) and then had to put her shoes back on. . and sit in her go cart. . and. . . . well, you get the drift.  Anyway, Matt did give her a little lecture about how she needs to ride the bus and it's very important to be ready on time, and that mommy was very upset b/c she should have been riding the bus with her friends.  Admittedly Matt is much less of a drill Sergent than me.  I like to get places early . . never late.  I am typically the reason that Brooklyn doesn't dawdle at our house b/c I'm constantly harping at her to move.  Maybe after today Matt has seen a little bit of the value in my pushiness.  He will never be the type to arrive at the airport three hours early. . but that's okay, we need balance.

I'm not documenting this because I'm mad at Matt. . .I'm not, I think it is sort of funny now. . . I'm documenting this because I think that some day Brooklyn will find this story amusing.
The rest of her day went great.  They worked on following lines . . curvy, straight, etc. and then worked on color patterns.  She said that they played a game called "Doggy where's your bone?" or something like that.  This is the closest I can find to what she explained (http://www.dltk-kids.com/animals/doggy_doggy_song.htm).

The sneak peak is over. . . bring on the real pics from Day 1 of Kindy:

The long walk to the bus stop. . . at 6:30 AM . . yawn!

Forgive my less than attractive shoes - I opted for comfort yesterday

The 3 Kindys from Bus Stop #1- Brooklyn, Mister G, and Miss A

 Excited!  Where is the bus?

There it is!  Even A's little sister is excited.

Getting ready to get on the bus for her first day!
